(alternate title : "All the reality that is fit to print.")
There is no doubt that we are living in an extraordinarily fucked up world. We have global warming, corrupt governments, a culture growing out of reality television and Splenda seems like a good idea to a lot of people.
Religion is the opiate of the masses.
Television is the opiate of the masses.
Opium is the opiate of the masses.
The three previous statements can all be proven as true through logical argument, but what is it really that is impacting our world into a false sense of happiness?
I have no idea.
Something I have always wanted was a child. As I meet children, as I get opportunities to teach them something about the world I have a strong urge to make one of my own. I am jealous of members of my family that have children, I am envious of their opportunity to shape a mind... to clone a lasting copy of themselves to live on in this world. Then reality settles in.
Is this the world that an innocent child deserves?
People smoke despite a clear label on the package that the product will kill them.
Priests diddle children.
Amid a clear global change, we don''t change our ways.
Any idiot can have a child when it takes months if not years for someone to adopt someone in need.
I was fortunate enough to have amazing parents. Two people that allowed me to develop into the person I am today, they were and are considered by their peers as a strange anomaly, they are also envied by these same people for the friendship they have with their three sons. When they could have molded us into anything they wanted, champion golfers ( in the way of Earl Woods ) or subjected us to fame on television ( we were gorgeous children ), they instead offered us everything that this world had to offer. Exposed to every religion, every bit of knowledge in the world available ... they let us grow into the men we are today.
I am a colossal fuck up... when compared to my brothers. I'm the explorer, never content. While my younger brothers take on more noble roles in the world I sit around and write hoping to eventually reach a reasonable conclusion that will convince you the reader to not have children.
Why?
In a world beyond repair... do you feel capable of teaching someone enough that they can fix your mistakes?
So I went and took a glass blowing class today. Truth be told it wasn't so much of a class as it was a place where for the same amount of money you would spend on a glass blown object you get to make it yourself and keep it. It turns out that this practice of blowing glass is ridiculously old. As a novel glass forming technique created in the middle of the last
century B.C., glassblowing exploited a working property of glass which
was previously unknown to the glass workers – inflation. Inflation
refers to the expansion of a molten blob of glass by introducing a
small amount of air to it. This property is based on the liquid
structure of glass where the atoms are held together by strong chemical
bonds in a disordered and random network, therefore molten glass is viscous enough to be blown and gradually hardens as it loses heat.
Wow!!! I am exhausted from that explanation of glass blowing that I copied and then pasted from Wikipedia. I myself have only a slight idea of how it is done at this point, and very little idea of why. I can tell you this though, that for the many years that it has been done, it has been mastered into a fine art. Some of the things these artists make destroy any image of glass blowing that you might have gotten while wandering Pier 1 for something "unique" for your home. The folks that took the time to let us get our hands dirty blowing glass are artists of a dangerous craft.
Enough of all that, here are some pictures.
Once the bowl that I made is done cooling, I will be sure to post a picture of it. It should only be a couple of days. In the mean time check out what these guys do, and click the link.
I have in my life been every type of artist. I realized early in my life that I wanted to create and to make something so perfectly beautiful that everyone in the world wanted to come and see.
I have made chalk drawings on the sidewalk. With little success.
I have played musical instruments from the saxophone to the guitar. I made little more than noise.
I have painted and I have drawn. I am no Leonardo da Vinci.
All of my life though I have known and eventually I settled on the art of the lazy. I decided I wanted to write. I was probably only thirteen. I would make up stories to tell, and stories to write. I would shamelessly show off, if only to impress the ladies. Today I actually cranked out what I can only call a "short short story", and while I don't usually post anything on here that I wrote with serious intent, I will tomorrow after a few "tidy it up" kind of edits.
... and on another note I would like to talk about how the hell some brilliant musicians got past me...
These two guys are absolutely amazing. I am going to include a song on tonights blog for you, I encourage you to sit back, crank up the volume and plug in some high quality headphones if you got them. I pride myself on knowing when things are cool before they were cool. ( I hated "W" before you did ) I am ashamed to say these guys have probably already booked Saturday Night Live, the last vestige of the " I knew it was cool before you" guy.
Anyway I will stop rambling at this point. Scroll down and hit play for The Black Keys ; Have Love Will Travel and stumble on back here tomorrow for a little bit of my actual writing.
